Tabbing when your cursor is at the start of list item text does not increase list item depth
Environment
Joplin version: 2.10.18 (prod, win32) Platform: Windows Plugins: Folding in Code Mirror Editor: 2.0.1 Note Tabs: 1.4.0 Outline: 1.5.9 Rich Markdown: 0.8.3 Simple Backup: 1.0.5
Steps to reproduce
- Create any kind of list (bullets, numbered, checkbox) with one item of text
- Press
Enterto create a new list item - Press
Tabto indent the list - the list item indents when it has no content - Press
Ctrl+Tabto unindent the list - the list item returns to the original depth. This can be done when the cursor is anywhere in the list item. - Add some text to the second list item
- Select a word of the text and press
Tab- the list item indents -
Ctrl+Tabto unindent the list - Move the cursor to the end of the line, or anywhere within the text, and press
Tab- a tab is inserted as expected - Move the cursor to the start of the text in the list item and press
Tab- inserts a tab, but ideally this would indent the list item
Describe what you expected to happen
Tabbing when your cursor is at the start of the list item text would increase the indent of the list item, just as it does right now if:
- The list item contains no text yet
- Any amount of the text is selected (even just one word)
Current behaviour of markdown files in VS Code, and lists in MS Word, does distinguish between tabbing within the text (inserts a tab) and tabbing at the start of the text (indents the text item).

It still needs some adjusting, but the beta editor in v2.13.2 should partially have this!
Things that still need to be done to improve this behavior:
- Insert a tab character (rather than indenting) when
- The cursor is in the middle of a list item or text block and no text is selected

This is still an issue in Joplin 2.12.19
I should add that this is in the plain text editor.
