After discussion with @danyx23, seems that we should do the simple thing first (allow you to disable the labels), and only if the labelling algorithm easily allows it, optionally consider...

Seems like the second approach is better, given that it will work for PNG exports. We would want fonts that are either similar width, or slightly narrower.

Closing this issue, since the previous approach hit a dead end with ESM. Superseded by https://github.com/owid/owid-grapher/issues/1667

Under the assumption that this is just about finding and changing a few coordinates for the narrow version of the map, then this seems worth doing and should only take...
