Years ago I coded a rule for this, but I have been reflecting about it for a long time.

O telemóvel é topo de gama.

Os telemóveis são topos de gamas.

Is “topo de gama” invariable (and thus the second sentence is wrong)?

Sorry, topo de gama, if used in pt-br, is extremely rare; however, following the pattern of other similar constructions, it should be topos de gama (we have top de linha, and it would be tops de linha)
