This happened to me and others. It is a known issue.

If you generated a backup of your wallet using an earlier version of this app, the current version of the app is not capable of restoring it!

Look here for more information:

https://www.reddit.com/r/dogecoin/comments/lffdn4/trying_to_restore_wallet_with_3m_doge_get_error/gmug6h2/

The solution I followed was NOT using an old APK (too risky, don't know what's in that package, and this app is buggy enough as it is). I used openssl on a linux machine to extract the key.

@SikoSoft so, my backup from 2014 does not work in the updated version of this wallet? Are you telling me that this could be the reason that none of the passwords that I remember and have tried are working?

it depends. there are many different problems for different cases. you can check www.btc2doge.com for help if you cant fix it.

I could recovery my wallet using the old app apk file. I know it's not the best option but I used before an api to check the balance and it's was empty =(

In fact I don't remember what I have done with all my coins from 2014, maybe I have lost everything from a HD that I have formatted by mistake years ago.

Hello can somebody please help me I have a wallet that I created on my Android and I also have the backup besides the fact that I sent a lot of coins that are wrong address and it says it was not accepted by the address somewhere on the chain I really need to figure out how to import this wallet into my core wallet or any other water at that if somebody's willing to help me figure out these two problems I'm willing to pay

If those transfers failed there is no problem and you should still have those coins on your wallet. The app should display the correct balance as if nothing happened.

  1. If you have access to that Android device and the wallet app on it, you can just transfer those coins to a new wallet of choice, on some other device.
  2. If you only have the backup file but forgot your password, you can follow this tutorial and try to guess it based on what you remember (parts of the password, number of characters/digits) https://github.com/gurnec/btcrecover/blob/master/TUTORIAL.md#btcrecover-tutorial you can ignore the fact it's meant for BTC because it works for DOGE just the same.
  3. If you still remember the password or just didn't secure the backup with one, you should be able to just transfer the file to another device with the same wallet app and find an "import wallet" function in it. Some apps and backups are cross-compatible and allow you to import a wallet backup file made in one app with a different app.

EDIT: Nevermind, I found your other posts with a clearer explanation of what happened.

I don't think Dogecoin and Bitcoin networks communicate, so technically your coins went to an address that "doesn't exist" in the Dogecoin network. A valid address that nobody has a key to. https://bitcoin.stackexchange.com/a/4919 I would have to check to make sure how addresses are generated for DOGE but Dogecoin code started basically as a clone of Bitcoin code, just renamed. Bitcoin addresses are generated by taking a cryptographic private key, then taking its public key, hashing that using sha256, hashing that hash using ripemd160, then encoding the output using base58. https://www.oreilly.com/library/view/mastering-bitcoin/9781491902639/ch04.html#:~:text=The%20bitcoin%20address%20is%20derived,of%20an%20arbitrary%2Dsized%20input. I'm wondering if the private key to that BTC Bittrex address of yours makes it possible to gain access to an identical address, but in DOGE network.

It's like keys and houses. You send someone money in an envelope, the postman slides it through the slot in the front door. If you have the key to the house, you can open the door and take the money. What you did is you sent your envelope to the right address, but in the wrong state. In real life you just go there and talk to the owner and if the address doesn't exist, the envelope bounces back to you. In crypto, the key comes first, and the lock to the house as well as the full address, the street name, number and zip code are all based on that key. And since the state of DOGia is just a clone of BTCgan, if that key-first rule is also an exact clone, then if you go to that same address in that other state, your key will still fit. Meaning the Bittrex key will open your DOGE address. That's an if that would take some research to check. Problem is crypto exchanges don't typically give out the private keys to the addresses there. If you could prove the address is yours, it's empty and you're willing to pay for the private key to that empty address, they could maybe unlink it from the account and give it to you. They are pretty famous for not being too cooperative though.

Yes, if

  1. You somehow manage to convince someone at Bittrex to share that private key.
  2. DOGE generates addresses the same way BTC does.

It all boils down to that "somehow", to what you did to change the address. As far as I know, you typically add addresses by generating new ones and old ones should not just disappear or get overwritten. You get a new, additional address, not change an existing one. Your wallet backup file should have all your addresses and keys to them in it. I think that if you open it as a text file and just search for the address, you should see if it's there. And if it is, the keys should be there as well. This way I was able to verify what address I have in my old wallet file, even without having to decrypt it. What's even funnier, I first had to locate the file itself too, because I kept it not only ecrypted but also stupidly hidden, renamed and pretending to be some system binary on an old system backup drive. I was able to locate it by creating 2 new wallets, encrypting both and checking what characteristic pieces of text I still see in them and then searching all files on the entire drive for those. So if you won't find the address in your wallet backup, you can also try that.

Look up how to do a recursive search for that address you're trying to regain access to and run it on the filesystem of the device you have this app on, or its readable backup. If you have any kind of file related to that lost address, it should come up. That's how I located that hidden wallet of mine.

It might be a good idea to try and make a good, fresh, clear and concise summary of your findings and start a fresh thread, double and triple checking all your claims first, attaching all the addresses and descriptions which is which, the ones in that wallet, the one you lost access to, the one on your exchange account, the ones you were sending from and to, maybe a directory and file tree of your device. You might attract some new people and ideas and it would be easier to lure someone new, with everything in one place like that. You can also buy some DOGE and wait another 7 years , this time making sure you won't lose access to your stash :)
