Insufficient permissions [Admin mode AND edited permissions]

Open staarchild97 opened this issue 4 months ago • 6 comments

Operating System

Windows 11

Patcher Program Version

v0.3.0

Installation Type

The Sims 2: Ultimate Collection (2014)

Describe the problem

Hi, I'm trying to execute the 2k patch on my UC install and it will not let me due to insufficient permissions. This is despite running in admin mode several times and also opening up the permissions on the ProgFiles install folders.

I do have LazyDuchess's RPC installed, as well as ReShade, but no UI replacements aside from a few widescreen fixes in my Docs folder. Would I need to run this on a clean install and re-add RPC and RS afterwards?

Traceback

Hi. The error pops up if the patch is unable to create a temporary file in any of the folders where the patches need to go (next to ones like FontStyle.ini, ui.package, etc). 💡 That gives me an idea in future to inform specifically which files are unwritable.

It is unusual that even as admin, they're still unwritable. LazyDuchess's RPC shouldn't matter, it sounds more like a file system permission problem.

To be absolutely sure, right click the installation folder and make sure both your username and Administrators group have "Full Control", then when applying, make sure it applies to subfolders as well.

If necessary, to be sure they're all consistent from the top-level down:

  1. Remove the explicit permissions for your username
  2. Apply (+ subfolders)
  3. Edit again and re-add your username; set to "Full Control".
  4. Apply (+ subfolders) again.

That should make it possible to run without admin too.

Windows Explorer folder permissions

(I used a dummy "EA GAMES" folder in this example, but it just needs to apply to the "The Sims 2 Ultimate Collection" folder)

If that doesn't work, we can try something else to find out which file is unwritable.

Hi, I have been trying to re-edit the permissions like how you said but I keep getting this popup during the process: [image: {9B298EB8-A4F2-4542-A25D-082A496CE9DA}.png] I'm re-installing the game to see if a fresh install will change the permissions issue. Thank you for your help so far :)

Oh no! The image didn't come through via email, please could you upload via GitHub or describe what it said?

A fresh install might fix things (particularly if you've transferred the game from a different drive, for example). Let us know how it goes.

If you still get permission issues, it might be worth checking your NTFS partition on next boot. In a Command Prompt, assuming the game is installed to the C: drive:

chkdsk /F /X C:

Hi, here is the image, hopefully it works on Github

I'm still waiting on the re-install as the EA App is super slow. I'll let you know the outcome.

Thanks. It does sound like some permissions did get mangled, like if your user account (or even the Administrators group) is denied access to a certain folder or lacks a "read" permission. Although, if it was only __Installer that did this, then that folder doesn't matter.

Prior to installing, I'd probably also had checked the EA App fully deleted the installation folder before installing again - in case of any leftovers.

By the way, if you'd like to try a newer patcher with unreleased improvements (loading screen, font fixes, slightly faster patch time), you could grab v0.3.0-25-gad6c900 from here. I'd like to get a new release out within the next few weeks.

Unfortunately, it was also the whole folder that came up in another popup. Thank you for the link to a newer test version as well, I might as well try that out if I can sort out the permissions issue.
