Question - Future developments

Open jacoposartore opened this issue 9 years ago • 9 comments

Dear @mostaphaRoudsari @chriswmackey @chiensiTB,

I recently started to work on an hotel's renovation together with a mechanical engineer who, following my display of the actual capabilities of Honeybee (he said it was awesome, in particular the OpenStudio components), asked me about the future availability of these features:

a. Humidity control. b. DHW (Domestic Hot Water). c. SWH (Solar Water Heating). d. PV (Photovoltaics). e. Heating and cooling plant radiant fraction (or a similar feature able to simulate high temperature radiant systems, vertical and ceiling panel heaters, floor warming systems, multicolumn radiators and forced air heaters). f. Heat recovery effectiveness (for OpenStudio).

I know that some of them will be implemented by @chiensiTB.

Hi-

I have taken a break for a bit on development but I am planning on working on domestic hot water and solar hot water, as well as hydronic radiant systems this year. I think that someone has already done PV, isn't that correct, @mostaphaRoudsari ?

Heat recovery would be very easy to implement, but there are many nuances. What would be ideal is to have your engineer put together a list of ideas that we can work on. Can you have your engineer do that? It would help us to guide development.

Here is an example...I can put in heat recovery, but do you also want to bypass the heat recovery device when free cooling is available? If so, this is another feature.

I can model radiant floors, but if you would like me to develop a parametric tool that automatically sizes the radiant floor capacity (limited by the floor temperature)...this iis again a feature.

I ask you to write down all of your features and requirements as a starting place.

Hi Chien Si,

You are awesome! Your plans seem to match what we are in need of, that's really great!

I will ask my engineer which parameters or characteristics he is usually looking at while designing heat recovery and radiant floor heating, then I will write you a list with the processes and variables he is using.

Thank you for being so helpful.

@mostaphaRoudsari @chriswmackey @chiensiTB, @jacoposartore @chiensiTB Hi Everyone

Just so that everyone knows what I have planned for the next 2 to 3 weeks (although development always takes longer than you think).

At the moment I am about half way through integrating PV into Honeybee and I plan to also develop batteries, generators and mirco wind turbines with the idea being that users will be able to simulate simple mircogrid systems in Honeybee and visualize not just energy data but also economic data such as the attached graph.

I am really excited about this because as far as I can tell this will mean that for the first time users will be able to directly link energy demand data from EnergyPlus to generation data effortless and easily (Designbuilder is pretty clunky).

Chen Si at some point I'd also like to integrate your solar hot water into this. Perhaps we can chat sometime? my skype is anton.szilasi

Back to PV's as he already mentioned Anton is developing the components. @stgeorges also is developing a component for Ladybug that uses PVWATTS for PV calculation.

PS: @antonszilasi this diagram looks beautiful.

Hi guys. Now that the OpenStudio issue appears to be solved, I am coming back online. I'm sorry I have not been responsive. I will start to collaborate.

@jacoposartore , I am just letting you know that humidity control and heat recovery (+ effectiveness) are now things that you can specify with HB OpenStudio systems. Some templates for radiant systems should be up here in the next few days.

We still don't have all of the other things on your checklist but I believe that domestic hot water should be high on the priority list. Also @antonszilasi might also consider taking up solar hot water and PV as he did on the RunE+Simulation component.

@jacoposartore You have been asking for Honeybee components, but you can also check for Ladybug Domestic Hot Water and Solar Water Heating components.

stgeorges avatar May 10 '16 09:05 stgeorges

Radiant systems are here:

There's a separate chiller/bolier in the template such that the radiant systems can get lower supply temperatures and you can adjust the "radiant fraction" as you say.

Unfortunately, I couldn't find any examples of radiant wall panels but we have radiant floors and, if there's enough demand for walls, I can find a way to put them in.

Also, because it's going to be a wile before we have domestic hot water and @stgeorges 's components are going to be the best resource for this for the time being, I am taking this issue off the OpenStudio milestone. -Chris

@chriswmackey,

Great! I'll give them a try and let you know. Thanks for everything!
