I started looking at this, and it is quite hairy. The base is quite old at this point and will be even older once #573 goes in. It might be easier to branch off again and add the relevant parts (using this branch as a reference).

If you want to have a go, I suggest cherry-picking the top four commits (starting with 54d4bcc87df697769938b9191b9bc8610b1cc07a), which seem to have all the necessary changes (previous commits seem to already have been merged in some form).
