I would like to do this, but unfortunately firefox does not support a favicon api (to render bookmark icons): https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1547426

Would some sort of a n svg rendering be possible?

If we have images, we can render whatever. Although we'd have to have an image for all the popular sites (and probably more) which isn't something I want to do.

I am also interested in a Firefox port of this extension. I'm simply an end-user but I'm wondering if how another extension that is available in both Chrome and FF makes use of icons might be of interest. Nellitab pulls in site icons (apparently "Touch" icons) and allows the uploading of icons for its new tab page with bookmarks. Don't know if this is helpful or not but wanted to pass it along because I really would like to use your extension on FF.

Thanks for the link. It's certainly possible to have icons in FF, but it either requires arbitrary website data access or the extension author must provide their own icons. It looks like nellitab used the all website data route: image

I don't think anyone would appreciate my extension requiring this permission (I wouldn't anyway). At the same time, I don't have the time to obtain / maintain a library of icons for all possible sites. So unfortunately (at least for now), I'm waiting for firefox to provide favicon support like chrome has. Maybe people could help motivate a firefox fix by commenting here: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1315616
