Unable to Fully Remove Background Music from macOS

Open desi3825 opened this issue 10 months ago • 3 comments

I downloaded Background Music on my iMac running macOS 15.3.1, but unfortunately, it didn’t work for me—all I got was static when using it. I decided to uninstall it using both CleanMyMac and Terminal, but despite my efforts, Background Music still appears as a sound output option in System Settings > Sound.

Here’s what I’ve tried so far:

  • Ran multiple Terminal commands to remove Background Music files, including /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/HAL/BackgroundMusic.driver and other related directories.
  • Restarted my Mac several times after each attempt.
  • Tried removing Background Music from Audio MIDI Setup, but the minus (-) button is grayed out, preventing me from deleting it.

Even though the application itself is no longer on my system, Background Music remains as an output device. How can I fully remove it from my machine?

Thanks for your help!

I also thought it was a trivial uninstall process, moved to Trash, used Clean My Mac, nothing worked.. Then I saw the uninstall instructions in the readme.

https://github.com/kyleneideck/BackgroundMusic#uninstall

At this point, I no longer had BM, so I first had to reinstall it and then run the uninstall script. Worked like a charm.
