Save state when switching selected bottom navigation item

When you are in a tool from the Tools screen (for example, Ruler) and you switch to another screen from the bottom menu (Weather, Astronomy, etc.), the tool's screen data disappears. I want to keep the current Tools submenu, and when I switch from there (Ruler, Pedometer, etc.) to any other menu from the bottom menu bar and go back to Tools, I want the application to show the submenu instead of the Tools list. And when the user wants to quickly see the Tools list (not a submenu like Ruler), I want to allow a second tap on the Tools menu item from within the screen to show the list as it is now. I'd like to keep all the actual tool data, like the measured cliff height. Now it's not, when switching screens from the bottom menu, the data is gone. This feature would prevent accidental data loss when switching screens from within the Tools screen, and would be especially useful when reading the 'User Guide'.

Thank you for the suggestion, I will experiment with this to see how it feels. I purposely disabled this behavior a while back because at the time I didn't like how it felt on the other top level items (ex. navigation), but I'll give it a second try.
