Wildcard records are not created with --registry txt

Open CraigGardener opened this issue 3 years ago • 1 comments

When --registry txt is set, wildcard record creation fails as the TXT record is invalid.

With registry set to noop, the wildcard record is created successfully.

a-*.example.com is not a valid hostname for which to create record.

Perhaps we could look at replacing * with a string such as external-dns-wildcard for the records?

I am using PowerDNS and the logs from external-dns are as follows:

time="2022-09-17T19:24:55Z" level=error msg="Unable to patch zone. Status: 422 Unprocessable Entity, Body: {\"error\": \"Name 'a-*.pages.example.demosubdomain.com.' contains unsupported characters\"}"

Hey @CraigGardener. There is a flag --txt-wildcard-replacement on external-dns. I think that might be what you need. However, I think we could have a discussion to set a sane default, since most providers would reject an asterisk.
