Run the control plane component in rootless mode

/feature

Describe the solution you'd like in detail We'd like to run the control plane EFS CSI Driver as rootless however efs-utils is trying to use a few commands https://github.com/aws/efs-utils/blob/master/src/watchdog/init.py#L82-L89 that are not available in rootless mode (efs-plugin/amazon-efs-watchdog looks up user database for retrieving credentials from '%user_home%/.aws' directory).

Logs:

E0916 19:31:34.917372       1 efs_watch_dog.go:330] amazon-efs-mount-watchdog[Error]: Traceback (most recent call last):
File "/usr/bin/amazon-efs-mount-watchdog", line 80, in <module>                                                                                                                                       'credentials': os.path.expanduser(os.path.join('~' + pwd.getpwuid(os.getuid()).pw_name, '.aws', 'credentials')),
KeyError: 'getpwuid(): uid not found: 2009'

A few solutions

  • Have a new version of efs-utils with these lines replaced with non privileged commands
  • Disable running the watchdog on the control plane through a cli flag sent to https://github.com/kubernetes-sigs/aws-efs-csi-driver/blob/master/pkg/driver/driver.go#L60, this flag would be set in the control plane only.

hey @wongma7, hope you're doing fine, is there someone that could help taking a look at this proposal to run the EFS control plane component in rootless mode? I also created a PR to disable it through a flag
