ProxySQL: Load-balancer for MariaDB Backend

ProxySQL seems to only be targeting the ClusterIP service - will this really provide adequate load balancing? I was imagining ProxySQL would replace that service. I also assumed ProxySQL needed to know about about each backend node to function correctly. I don't see a way besides appbinding to configure this with kubedb, and this is what specifying the appbinding via backend seems to do.
