Hm. Something seems wrong with the device at USB layer. Does it work with any other driver/OS?

kuba-moo avatar Apr 22 '17 19:04 kuba-moo

Yes, it worked perfectly on windows 7.

Hm. What is the platform (CPU)? Where did you get the firmware from? Is there chance you could try to compile the driver from Mediatek's website?

kuba-moo avatar Apr 24 '17 22:04 kuba-moo

I have a dell inspiron 1545, Pentium(R) Dual-core, 2,00 GB, Kali linux light wich cames with the firmware in it but, as I didn´t know, i downloaded it from github. Now about Mediatek´s website I don´t know if I can LOL, but I can try.

Oh I´m sorry because i forgot to say that at Mediatek´s website there is no download option for my MT7601U, just Contact sales option.

Ah, I think they may have removed it after I upstreamed this driver... You can find some copies on GH, like this one: https://github.com/porjo/mt7601u As far as FW goes, can you re-download it to make sure it's not corrupted? This is the MD5 sum it should have:

$ md5sum /lib/firmware/mt7601u.bin
696cedb8e76ecc0cda9f9b0d3972c64d  /lib/firmware/mt7601u.bin

hammer@hammer:/lib/firmware$ md5sum mt7601u.bin 696cedb8e76ecc0cda9f9b0d3972c64d mt7601u.bin hammer@hammer:/lib/firmware$

I was asking about the md5sum of the firmware, so /lib/firmware/mt7601u.bin:

$ md5sum /lib/firmware/mt7601u.bin

Sorry, I run out of ideas :( Either the card is broken, or the USB controller, or the two just don't like each other :(

LOL. Oh friend... what a pity, I'm so glad for your help. I think I'll have to buy another one. Thanks.

The problem is in mt7601u_phy_init > mt7601u_init_cal > mt7601u_mcu_calibrate(dev, MCU_CAL_RXIQ, 0). With this lines commented initialization ends successfully and interface appears. Don't know is it working or not.

Hi @aleksander!
Thanks for investigating, did you check if the device works with calibration removed? Now we have two bad devices, perhaps we can try to find commonalities. What's your dongle Aleksander? @jrfabio how about yours?

kuba-moo avatar Jun 07 '17 20:06 kuba-moo

did you check if the device works with calibration removed?

Yes, device works without calibration. I successfully connected to my phone and loaded some web sites. Not sure about speed and stability though. Need more testing.

What's your dongle Aleksander?

Mine is Elisona USB Wi-Fi adapter ordered from aliexpress (https://aliexpress.com/item/150Mbps-Mini-Wireless-USB-Wlan-Adapter-802-11g-n-Wifi-Dongle-Lan-Card-w-Antenna-big/32527991067.html)

if this help I can dissassemble the device to see whats in there.

I still can't find a cd-rom to check CD contents, maybe I'll find modified driver there.

aleksander avatar Jun 08 '17 08:06 aleksander

Hi everyone. As I said, I gave up on my device and will buy another one which matches with kali linux. Thanks.

I think the chip reports to be the same version of silicon as all the others I've seen (well there are two variants but this is the more common one). I will try to get one from AliExpress, although it will take a month to be delivered ;) Definitely check out if there is a Linux driver on the CD. The version of Linux driver I had from MediaTek was quite old, perhaps they changed something.

3.0.0.4 is the version I was basing this driver on :( One thing you could try to do is installing a very old kernel (~3.8 times probably) and see if the vendor driver works there. For now I think you should be safe to hack the calibration out, I think it only affects sensitivity.

kuba-moo avatar Jun 15 '17 20:06 kuba-moo

I just got my device from Alibaba and it works :/ Can you try your with Fedora 25, kernel 4.11.4-200.fc25.x86_64? That works fine for me..

FWIW my device has a white round sticker on the back which says Tolvia.

No, my device don't have this sticker, is white round but says "AF"

romeumellobr avatar Jul 06 '17 15:07 romeumellobr

Damn. If Fedora 25 doesn't work for you I must have gotten a device from a different batch. I will try to inspect the calibration code over the weekend to see if there are any bugs I can spot. Stay tuned.

Hi @kuba-moo, I have the same problem. I buyed 3 devices, 2 work well, 1 not. Can I send to you this one diferent, if you hope, for you analyse and, hope, enhance the driver?

jguidini avatar Jul 14 '17 12:07 jguidini

just bought one of those black & red devices off ebay and got the same issue on my raspberry pi

also the repository of porjo does not exists anymore so I do not have any clue how to fix this

the only difference I see is the eeprom dmesg shows me "EEPROM ver:0c fae:00"

drbeat avatar Aug 25 '17 10:08 drbeat

@romeumellobr @jguidini @drbeat This is the temporary solution I use for my mt7601u stick from aliexpress:

  1. From kernel.org dowload linux kernel source corresponding to your working kernel.
  2. Unpack the kernel source. cd to drivers/net/wireless/mediatek/mt7601u
  3. Open phy.c. Find function mt7601u_init_cal and comment out call mt7601u_mcu_calibrate(dev, MCU_CAL_RXIQ, 0); like so:
        //ret = mt7601u_mcu_calibrate(dev, MCU_CAL_RXIQ, 0);
        //if (ret)
        //      return ret;
  1. Build module make -C /lib/modules/$(uname -r)/build M=$(pwd) modules
  2. Remove the device
  3. rmmod mt7601u
  4. insmod mt7601u.ko
  5. Insert the device
  6. Check there are no errors in dmesg and interface appeared in ip link

aleksander avatar Aug 25 '17 11:08 aleksander

@drbeat I also encountered a VERY similar error as you this morning with my MT6701 and rpi (1B)... I stumbled across found this thread whilst trying to figure out the cause...

And for me the SOLUTION was to use a USB powered hub between pi and MT7601. Turned out, it just wasn't getting enough power from the pi's own USB ports... (I'm now also providing power to the pi from the same hub so it means I don't use any extra power sockets!) https://s27.postimg.org/ul4rm32ab/pi1_USB-power_ralink-_MT7601.jpg

I hope this helps.

stevewalsh123 avatar Aug 25 '17 14:08 stevewalsh123

@aleksander Can you explain it more clearly? As I'm running Ubuntu 17.04, I don't know what and which to download. I just googled the path and found a result on GitHub. I downloaded the mt7601u folder alone. On running the 'make' command, it throws an error. Please help.

safeuq avatar Oct 01 '17 06:10 safeuq

@aleksander

This is the temporary solution I use for my mt7601u stick from aliexpress:

From kernel.org dowload linux kernel source corresponding to your working kernel. Unpack the kernel source. cd to drivers/net/wireless/mediatek/mt7601u Open phy.c. Find function mt7601u_init_cal and comment out call mt7601u_mcu_calibrate(dev, MCU_CAL_RXIQ, 0); like so: //ret = mt7601u_mcu_calibrate(dev, MCU_CAL_RXIQ, 0); //if (ret) // return ret; Build module make -C /lib/modules/$(uname -r)/build M=$(pwd) modules Remove the device rmmod mt7601u insmod mt7601u.ko Insert the device Check there are no errors in dmesg and interface appeared in ip link

Thanks very much - this worked for me - I receive the same warning message in dmesg:

"Warning unsupported EEPROM version 0d"

But the device works perfectly, and will happily max out the 25 Mb/s ADSL I tested it with. It seems to be stable after shifting a few gigs through it, no drops, no problem with invalid packets, signal strength is as expected (typically around 72 - 90 Mb/s connection in a busy environment), and negotiation of network and security protocols works fine.

I do have one issue - the driver seems to be restored back to the kernel default on each reboot, and I have to run

rmmod mt7601u insmod ./mt7601u.ko

from the directory where I compiled the updated driver, each time.

Perhaps you have encountered that? I presume it's because the driver is not 'signed', and it detects a 'tainted kernel' (I am pretty new to Linux).

(As an aside, during my attempts to get two mt7601u based devices to work, I upgraded my Ubuntu 17.04 kernel to 4.13.5, and suddenly the Atheros based internal wifi on my Dell Venue Pro 11 5130 sprang into life.)

@jrfabio I believe the workaround by @aleksander will solve your original problem, if you are still looking for a fix.

I am living in Brasil, and mt7601u cards are everywhere... getting this adjustment to the driver into the kernel will make a lot of people happy.

mcquiggd avatar Oct 06 '17 15:10 mcquiggd

The same problem here, to get the dongle running I had to comment the following lines too:

//ret = mt7601u_mcu_calibrate(dev, MCU_CAL_DPD, dev->dpd_temp);
        //if (ret)
        //      return ret;

and: //mt7601u_mcu_calibrate(dev, MCU_CAL_DPD, dev->curr_temp); in function mt7601u_phy_recalibrate_after_assoc

hoping this may help.

Nidroide avatar Nov 02 '17 17:11 Nidroide

Does working mt7601u also have same ASIC and MAC revision, "ASIC revision: 76010001 MAC revision: 76010500"?

We can probably workaround this by checking the revision.

khfeng avatar Nov 08 '17 07:11 khfeng

@khfeng

Perhaps your comment was not directly addressed to me, but in my case, my card that now works, with the workaround of commenting out mt7601u_mcu_calibrate is indeed "ASIC revision: 76010001 MAC revision: 76010500".

Understood.

... As an aside, I did have another card that would not work with the workaround - it did have the same revision we are discussing, but did not report any Device strings or Manufacturer string at all. It was the 'unbranded with red logo and antenna' that seems so common - the same as mentioned by aleksander above https://github.com/kuba-moo/mt7601u/issues/64#issuecomment-306724936; note that his also does not report the device strings / manufacturer.

Does anyone contact the mt7601u vendor? I believe it's MediaTek.

I tried two of them, shipped from different cities, same behaviour, neither worked with 'the fix'. Bought a different card without an antenna, that reports the device strings and manufacturer, and the workaround is successful. All the ASIC revisions, Mac Revisions, Firmware versions, build times are identical._

If we can't differentiate at all, we can't upstream the workaround.

@khfeng FWIW I think even if someone did already try to contact MTK, it's definitely worth contacting them again. The more people write to them, the more likely they are to care.

My nonane black-red 148f:7601 mt7601u mini stick is working now! Tested on Ubuntu 14.04 (kernel 4.4) and Ubuntu 17.10 (kernel 4.13). Thanks to aleksander and Nidroide! Just want to clarify instruction:

  1. Download corresponding kernel source from kernel.org. For example: if you have 4.4.0-104-generic download version 4.4.
  2. From archive unpack just folder drivers/net/wireless/mediatek/mt7601u
  3. Edit phy.c. Find function mt7601u_init_cal and comment out call mt7601u_mcu_calibrate(dev, MCU_CAL_RXIQ, 0); like so:
//  ret = mt7601u_mcu_calibrate(dev, MCU_CAL_RXIQ, 0);
//  if (ret)
//      return ret;
//  ret = mt7601u_mcu_calibrate(dev, MCU_CAL_DPD, dev->dpd_temp);
//  if (ret)
//      return ret;

Find function mt7601u_phy_recalibrate_after_assoc and comment out call mt7601u_mcu_calibrate(dev, MCU_CAL_DPD, dev->curr_temp); like so:

void mt7601u_phy_recalibrate_after_assoc(struct mt7601u_dev *dev)
{
//  mt7601u_mcu_calibrate(dev, MCU_CAL_DPD, dev->curr_temp);

    mt7601u_rxdc_cal(dev);
}
  1. Build module: make -C /lib/modules/$(uname -r)/build M=$(pwd) modules
  2. Remove device
  3. sudo rmmod mt7601u
  4. sudo insmod ./mt7601u.ko
  5. Insert device
  6. Check there are no errors in dmesg and interface appeared in ip link, check connection stability.
  7. To make change persistent till next kernel upgrade: backup original module and replace with compiled. To find out where is original module run modinfo mt7601u (view string filename: /lib/modules/_KERNEL_VERSION_/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/mediatek/mt7601u/mt7601u.ko).

I have TP-Link TL-WN727N device (148f:7601 Ralink Technology, Corp. MT7601U Wireless Adapter) that works on ubuntu 4.4.0-109-generic kernel, but doesn't work on 4.10.0-30-generic even with @mrgromov patch applied.

Any chance you could try 4.8 and 4.9 kernels? There is pretty much a single commit added in each of these releases if you could try both we will find out what broke things for you.

kuba-moo avatar Jan 31 '18 23:01 kuba-moo

@kuba-moo actually my assumption that this is related to kernel version is kind of wrong as after i have upgraded linux-firmware package it stopped working for me immediately. I will try to rollback and re-test to provide a working kernel/firmware package combination at least for ubuntu

I was facing similar issue with mt7601u on VirtualBox with LUbuntu 16.04 kernel 4.4.0-45-generic. Doing following solves the issue:

  1. sudo sed -i 's/wifi.powersave = 3/wifi.powersave = 2/' /etc/NetworkManager/conf.d/default-wifi-powersave-on.conf
  2. using USB 2.0 instead of USB 1.0 controller on virtualbox. For this I need to install virtualbox extension pack. PS: seems its not permanent :( connection gone after some time and unable to reconnect.

Here's a funny deal : My device works fine with no compilation whatsoever required on Ubuntu 18.04.1 (kernel : 4.15.0-38-generic). It does not work (connect to networks) with Debian 9.5 (kernel : 4.9.0-8-amd64) Initially, lsusb would recognize the device, show me the right information about it; lsmod showed that the kernel module required to make the device was loaded. However, it wouldn't show up in my WiFi network settings. Upon one of my reboots, I noticed an error log saying that it couldn't load the firmware for the device. I looked in /lib/firmware and the firmware was indeed missing. I simply copied the firmware file from my Ubuntu installation directly into my Debian installation (both of the OSes reside on the same hard-disk; for privacy sanity reasons); checked the md5sum of the copied file as mentioned here (it checks out).

My problem is that the device works fine until the point that it has to connect to some network. It detects long-range networks (networks that my crippled internal wireless card can't) but it just wouldn't connect to any network. Even the hotspot from my phone that is sitting practically next to the computer. My internal wireless card can connect to that one at least (just not a router that is sitting in the next room).

I don't think it's something to do with the driver, since the device works fine on my Ubuntu installation (considering there hasn't been any changes to the driver since 2016 up until kernel version 4.16).

I find this in dmesg :

[  624.997557] mt7601u 1-1.3:1.0: Error: RX urb failed:-71

Is there something that I can do to debug this issue on my Debian installation? I also know that these are the problems that accompany free softwares like Debian but I don't want to use Ubuntu exclusively. Please help.

shinenelson avatar Nov 12 '18 21:11 shinenelson

@shinenelson Interesting - would you be able to build the kernel by yourself and try to bisect upstream commit where the device starts to work?

kuba-moo avatar Nov 13 '18 01:11 kuba-moo

I could try building; but I have to say that I haven't done this before though. I might mess something up in the process. :/ I'm not sure. I can get back after some playing around with the kernel. Apart from that, is there some easier way other than compiling / building the kernel from source? (I think the kernel source alone is >2GB and after compilation it would probably be around 4-6GB) Also, I don't want to mess around with my actual operating system, so, I have to try it out on a virtual machine which wouldn't actually emulate the actual scenario for me. The other option is to find a broken laptop that isn't exactly usable, but in working condition that I can compile kernels as much as I want and see how it goes. That's not practical for me either. Hence, I'm asking for some other easier alternative.

Is this issue still happen on latest version of the driver included in the kernel (code here looks a bit outdated , last commit I can see is from Dec 6, 2016) ?

sgruszka avatar Mar 16 '19 11:03 sgruszka

As far as I know yes - it failed to initialise on 5.0, I patched the kernel before I built it. YMMV :p

The solution described here worked for me in Ubuntu 16.04 and 18.04: https://github.com/kuba-moo/mt7601u/issues/64#issuecomment-352250127

I will reference it here:

Originally written by ingate. Thanks to aleksander and Nidroide. Tested on Ubuntu 14.04 (kernel 4.4), Ubuntu 17.10 (kernel 4.13) and Ubuntu 18.04 (4.15.0-36-generic)

// ret = mt7601u_mcu_calibrate(dev, MCU_CAL_RXIQ, 0); // if (ret) // return ret; // ret = mt7601u_mcu_calibrate(dev, MCU_CAL_DPD, dev->dpd_temp); // if (ret) // return ret;

Find function mt7601u_phy_recalibrate_after_assoc and comment out call mt7601u_mcu_calibrate(dev, MCU_CAL_DPD, dev->curr_temp); like so:

void mt7601u_phy_recalibrate_after_assoc(struct mt7601u_dev *dev) { // mt7601u_mcu_calibrate(dev, MCU_CAL_DPD, dev->curr_temp);

mt7601u_rxdc_cal(dev);

}

  1. Build module: make -C /lib/modules/$(uname -r)/build M=$(pwd) modules
  2. Remove device
  3. sudo rmmod mt7601u
  4. sudo insmod ./mt7601u.ko
  5. Insert device
  6. Check there are no errors in dmesg and interface appeared in ip link, check connection stability.
  7. To make change persistent till next kernel upgrade: backup original module and replace with compiled. To find out where is original module run modinfo mt7601u (view string filename: /lib/modules/KERNEL_VERSION/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/mediatek/mt7601u/mt7601u.ko).

// ret = mt7601u_mcu_calibrate(dev, MCU_CAL_RXIQ, 0);

Does it works without commenting CAL_RXIQ ? Vendor driver does DPD calibration under conditional compilation, so perhaps it should be disabled on some devices based on USB ID or some EEPROM flag. But it always does RXIQ calibration .

@sgruszka , Did not tried. Please follow the following steps to load the module:

$ sudo rmmod mt7601u.ko
$ sudo modprobe mac80211
$ sudo insmod ./mt7601u.ko

pedrombmachado avatar Apr 04 '19 10:04 pedrombmachado

FWIW, for me things work without any extra calibration masking .

sgruszka avatar Apr 04 '19 10:04 sgruszka

I have a small mt7601u dongle ubuntu 16.10 I have follow the comment: ### pedrombmachado commented It can work 5 minutes .After 5 minutes it report: mt7601u 8-3:1.0: Error: RX urb failed:-71 and disconnect the wifi. The small dongle is hot.

I change another mt7601u dongle . The dongle have a External antenna(The two mt7601u is not one manufacturer). It is hot too. But it can work fine with ubuntu 16.10 and ubuntu 18.04 I think, the driver is work fine normal , but chip is work instability. When Temperature rise. It lost some data, and the error process have bug in it. The error process It should have re_init the dongle, but it close the network.So If someone check the error process, maybe will fix it.( Just guess )

qinchuan12345 avatar Apr 18 '19 05:04 qinchuan12345

@qinchuan12345 does the driver not work for you if you don't use changes from previous comments ? MCU_CAL_DPD is exactly for temperature calibration so maybe dongle overheat because of that calibration removal. You can also compile with debugging enabled by this patch enable_debug.patch.txt and provide dmesg output. It should show more what happen before RX urb failed error.

sgruszka avatar Apr 18 '19 09:04 sgruszka

I test it again One of mt7601u(have a External antenna) is work fine . and run in buildroot system(kernel 4.15.16), dirver code is in kernel . some time it work fine, but some time , when startup, it will failed to be loaded with return -2 error There are more in normal work than failures.

qinchuan12345 avatar Apr 18 '19 12:04 qinchuan12345

@qinchuan12345 so you need to modify (remove DPD and RXIQ calibration) otherwise dongle overheat ? Or it overheat with modification too on some system but not on ubuntu ?

sgruszka avatar Apr 18 '19 12:04 sgruszka

@sgruszka I test it again One of mt7601u(have a External antenna) is work fine . and run in buildroot system(kernel 4.15.16), dirver code is in kernel ,modified follow this article. One of mt7601u(have a External antenna) is work fine with ubuntu 16.04. This driver is from this gitbub and modified follow this article.

One of mt7601u(have a External antenna) run in buildroot system(kernel 4.15.16), dirver code is in kernel ,without any modify. some time it work find, but some time , when startup, it will failed to be loaded with return -2 error

test times is not enough. So Stability is unknown

qinchuan12345 avatar Apr 18 '19 13:04 qinchuan12345

small one(No antenna, very hot) It can't work

I bought another mt7601u(have long antenna),It can work fine with ubuntu 18.04 And work fine with ubunt 16.04 + install the driver that download in this github and modified follow this article And can work with buildroot kernel 4.15.16

qinchuan12345 avatar Apr 18 '19 15:04 qinchuan12345

small one(No antenna, very hot) It can't work

Does this happen with or without the modification (DPD calibration removal) ?

sgruszka avatar Apr 19 '19 08:04 sgruszka

@sgruszka I have test all the case , ubuntu driver no modify, ubuntu + modified code ,buildroot nomodify and modified code ,all can't work fine. If nomodify, the device can't setup success, If modified, It can setup success,but 10 minute after, It died.

qinchuan12345 avatar Apr 19 '19 08:04 qinchuan12345

@qinchuan12345 does commenting only MCU_CAL_RXIQ or only MCU_CAL_DPD make things work ?

sgruszka avatar Apr 19 '19 08:04 sgruszka

@sgruszka Yes delete MCU_CAL_RXIQ and MCU_CAL_DPD, can let the small dongle to steup the driver. and work fine about 10 minutes. And another mt7601u will work fine without delete them.

So, can somebody provide information if disabling only DPD calibration without RXIQ is sufficient to make driver to initialize ?

Additionally please provide content of: /sys/kernel/debug/ieee80211/phy1/mt7601u/eeprom_param file , perhaps we should do not perform DPD calibration if TSSI is enabled. If not we at least can add module option to disable DPD, so code modification will not be needed to make devices work with the driver.

Also, do you have Mediatek driver available on provided CD for not working devices? Driver available on Mediatek web page is old and perhaps does not support non-working devices and we need some updated vendor driver as reference to correctly fix this problem.

For the raspbian user firs off all :

sudo apt-get install raspberrypi-kernel-headers

and than follow the solution of @pedrombmachado #issuecomment-479672261

The solution described here worked for me in Ubuntu 16.04 and 18.04: #64 (comment)

I will reference it here:

In Ubuntu 18 with linux headers 4.15.0-66-generic the fix isn't longer viable because make errors. When making the fixed / patched driver module make throws the following werror:

I tried to ignore the warnign with no good outcome. Any idea how to fix it? I found out that this function exists in https://static.lwn.net/kerneldoc/driver-api/firmware/fallback-mechanisms.html, but for some reason isn't existing in my case.

Edit: I changed the call for a return 0 as stated in this repo, an i will see if it works.. Edit2: it works!

I get this problem when using the dongle with usb cable. Tested 2 usb cables the result are the same. So maybe not enough power when using the cables

So I have tried to do a different thing: reverted phy.c and edited mcu.c instead. I have removed the attempt to send a message and replaced it with simple return 0;

mt7601u_mcu_calibrate(struct mt7601u_dev *dev, enum mcu_calibrate cal, u32 val)
{
	struct sk_buff *skb;
	struct {
		__le32 id;
		__le32 value;
	} __packed __aligned(4) msg = {
		.id = cpu_to_le32(cal),
		.value = cpu_to_le32(val),
	};

	skb = mt7601u_mcu_msg_alloc(&msg, sizeof(msg));
	if (!skb)
		return -ENOMEM;
	/* We don't need calibration here */
	return 0;
	/* return mt7601u_mcu_msg_send(dev, skb, CMD_CALIBRATION_OP, true); */
}

This time it works better:

Sorry, no patch because I forgot to make a backup copy of the file this time. But hope this helps. Try editing mcu.c and replacing the last line of mt7601u_mcu_calibrate with return 0;

The dongle was able to scan for network but I didn't try to connect it anywhere yet.
