mark in first line of buffer not shown

When I drop a mark on the first line of the buffer, the mark is not shown.

Steps to reproduce:

1. open an empty buffer
2. hit ma

The sign column width changes from 0 to 2, and the mark is indeed placed (since 'a does take me to the first line), but the mark text is not shown.
