toc macro - how to set pipe as separator in flat style?

I' m still working with 5.9, and successfully using the toc macro. I get the flat style and other settings as levels working , but I'm not successful in modifying the separator e.g. from brackets to pipe. Has anybody a hint for me, what I'm doing wrong?
