GAMM as a model class?

Hello,

I am trying to run the mediate function using a mediator model of class "lmer" (from lme4) and an outcome model of class "gamm", due to nested random effects. However, only a class "gam" is compatible. Is it possible to add "gamm" as an allowable model class?
