Yes to use [ set labelMode to kMTMathUILabelModeDisplay. (This is the default).

To center an equation set textAlignment to kMTTextAlignmentCenter. (The default is left aligned.)

It might be better to use 2 MTMathUILabels to do what you are trying to do.
