Share audio on device

Open TheLastProject opened this issue 10 years ago • 7 comments

Currently, Kontalk has 2 places to record sound. Either by holding the microphone next to the chat area, or by choosing Audio from attachments.

While I personally prefer the attachment UI for recording, as it allows me to check what I recorded before sending it, having two ways to record audio but no way to share a recording made earlier or by another device (or a song I like) seems strange.

Personally, I'd prefer the following solution:

  • Make short-clicking the microphone next to the text input area open the old audio recording way.
  • Turn the audio button in attachments into a file selection option.

I'm not going to change behaviour of the PTT button because it's purpose it's just that: quick and short communication when you don't have time to press buttons :-) Including external audio files means that we need to compress them before sending them.

Just to be clear, I wasn't suggesting to remove the push-to-talk functionality. However, single-clicking the mic icon currently does nothing. Because of this, I was suggesting that a single-tap could perhaps start the old recording activity and holding the mic could start the PTT recording as it currently does.

On a sidenote, the lack of response on single-tap also confused my grandma a lot when I first showed her, because she kept trying to tap instead of hold it.

Sorry I didn't get it on first read. Might be a good idea, however...

... if I use the single-tapping for another feature, users might not realize that long-pressing does another thing :-) unless of course they are clearly advised of that (some text stating that or something).

You raise a fair point. I would personally explain them in the dialog, but it would be good to have more discussions and suggestions to make sure this would be the best way.

Quick mock-up (the wording could surely be better, but it's about the idea): kontalk_ptt_explain

That might be a way too, yeah. Thanks.

Hi, I tried out the 2 ways to record sound:

  • by holding the microphone next to the chat area is limited to 59 seconds
  • by choosing Audio from attachments is limited to 2 minutes

My suggestion: it would be nice if both could be limited to 3 minutes. I know people who talk slowly and take there time. Thanks a lot.

About sharing audio: I noticed that it's not possible to share audio messages to other chats. This could be improved too.
