Images not loading after the app has been running in the background for a while

When I launch Camera Roll, most of the time the images load fine. However, when I then switch to another app and get back to Camera Roll after some time (not instantly), I'm greeted with an empty screen - there are no albums, just the toolbar on top of the screen. The only way to load the pictures is either using Refresh option from the overflow menu, or completely exiting the app with the back button and launching it again.

I'm using version 1.0.6 from Play Store on Sony Xperia XZ Premium running Android 8.0, but the bug has also been present on earlier versions of the app, earlier Android versions, and other phone models too.
