I know this is probably an unwelcome question, but do you have any instructions for a beginner?

To a beginner. I would recommend the Modbus wiki https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Modbus And http://jamod.sourceforge.net/ which is jamod project site, has a better documentation. You would find they are simply designed. And there are also some useful example in this project, which would give you a an hand-on experience.
