elscreen-server causes vc to err on Emacs 24.4

Currently I don't have time to track this down, but just for the record I regularly get the following error when opening a file with emacsclient under a Git work tree.

*ERROR*: Args out of range: #("Git@" 0 4 (help-echo "Locally added file under the Git version control system")), 0, 7

There seems to be a problem with elscreen-server and VC on Emacs 24.4.
