Idea to improve the patch tool

I know nothing about programing with the raspberry pi or Linux, a problem I am taking steps to correct. Would it be possible through the use of a log file on the individual pi for the tool to mark any applied patches as complete, there by if all patches are complete it can go on to the update tool?

The longer the list of patches gets the more confusing it might get.
