Can you upgrade this to use okhttp3

okhttp3 is the newer and maintained stack. It would be great if our app doesn't have to depend on okhttp in addition to okhttp3. Thanks

I did this in a PR and it was tested in production but @klinker24 ran into all sorts of issues so it was reverted.
