Windows Live Essentials Erroring out upon starting install in XP
Upon downloading said program from Legacy Update, it errors out with the error of OnCatalogResult 0x80090326 and the next steps of An unknown error occurred. clicking get help brings me to a "this page cannot be displayed" by IE.
The Windows Live Essentials servers have been shut down ages ago and has been replaced with Skype. Legacy Update doesn't have the required files to install it.
In my case, I just skipped the update. by excluding it on the LegacyUpdate website.
Hope that helps :)
Legacy Update should replace the exe that is downloaded with the offline installer, since that one doesn't require now-defunct servers to install. It could apply the Escargot patch to WLM too.
Here are all the offline installers for all versions and all languages of Windows Live Essentials:
http://web.archive.org/web/20150313192405/http://windows.microsoft.com/en-GB/windows-live/essentials-install-offline-faq
You can even change "en-GB" in the URL to your own language and probably get the information on the web page in your own language.
Please be aware of this: you may have to change the URL for the offline installer after having followed the appropriate link (that is, deleting some numbers and letters in the end of the URL). Unfortunately, there may be some minutes of further working with the URLs and the Wayback Machine before the download of the offline installer can begin.
I have the same problem on my Windows XP SP3 lab
Windows Live cannot be installed on my VM:
Error Reference in Legacy Update already gives us some clues ("The requested URL does not exist on the server.").
I agree with @thepwrtank18 that the Legacy Update should replace the online installer with the offline one (as mentioned by @AntonFromSweden); it doesn't make much sense to keep this "broken" installer.
Maybe it would be cool if users could opt in to download the online installers. What do you think, guys?
A problem with replacing the installer with an offline one would be that Windows would probably throw a fit over a checksum/certificate being invalid.
