Compile Step Add Chapters
One step that might be good to have, especially if you are using single notes for scenes (or sections in nonfic) instead of chapters, is to put a chapter title when the chapter number changes. I put chapter and scene number in my frontmatter. If that's there, maybe it could be used to add or re-add chapter headers for a longer piece. Or, indeed section separators if it's scene by scene. If one scene is scene 3, chapter 1, and the next is scene 1 chapter 2, then perhaps the chapter header could be added.
A simple workaround for this is to make a scene that’s blank except for the chapter title you want, and then put it in the right place in the ordering.
I think this may be covered by the Prepend Title
compile step? Especially in the incoming version (currently in beta), it will insert titles, numbers, and even headers (#
based on indent depth) for you. Can you take a look at that and let me know if it meets your needs?
I would be nice to distinguish separators for various levels of indented scenes. For instance, if a scene is level 1 and should be treated like a chapter then we might want to indicate a page break. But if it is a level 2 or lower, we might just want a certain kind of string or newlines. But the page break would need to come after all indented scenes under that level 1 to have the right break between chapters. Or conversely, the separation (e.g., page break) can optionally happen prior to that scene instead of after. I added this comment here because presumably this kind of activity would be what we would need for something that accomplishes a "add chapters" type of functionality but uses existing built-in steps instead.
Of course, this could be done in post-processing, but it would be nice to have that taken care of during the compilation.
