[BUG]: 1.21.8 (Fabric) CFI causes End portal blocks to flash pure light blue

Before creating an issue, please make sure you have checked the following:

  • [x] This issue does not appear without Chunks Fade In installed.
  • [x] All my mods (not only Chunks Fade In) are up-to-date.
  • [x] Similar issue had not already been reported before in the issue tracker.

What happened?

I noticed End portal blocks happened to flash pure light blue every now and again, wondered who might be responsible when checking through rendering mods and found this:

When I disabled the mod via configs and exited the config screen (reloading the world):

If the mod is re-enabled at the same time the portal will glow again. I didn't see this occur in 1.21.5 (that I noticed at least), I wonder if it could be some odd interaction of the newer fog and End portals?

While noticed on a heavily modded instanced, I can confirm this occurs even with only CFI and Sodium (tested separately).

Steps to reproduce

Load up game in 1.21.8 with CFI and Sodium, kill dragon, observe portal for a few minutes, shouldn't take longer than a minute or two to happen.

Hi! I've already tried to fix this bug for months, but every time I tried to fix it, I just could not, because I did not do anything special to end portals. Also this did happen even with the old 2.0.x versions. But I guess I'll also try today, maybe I would finally find the issue.

While I was testing my build, I saw this error and found this issue. And I accidentally noticed this pattern. If there are no entities near the End portal, then it lights up white.

But as soon as the entity appears in the visible area, the portal starts to display normally.

P.S. Yeah, without Chunky Fade In mod End portal work normally.

What mods do you have and what are their versions? I killed all entities, the F3 showed "E: 0/1" (the only one left is the player entity), I tried on all versions from 1.21.6 to 1.21.10, but nothing. I just can not replicate this now. I remember that I had replicated it somehow a while ago in a normal world, and I did not do anything to the entities, and it was somehow linked to the camera orientation (maybe this culled the entities). Possibly not having any entities rendered is only one condition of many for this to happen :(

I have created a separate new clean instance of minecraft 1.21.9 + fabric loader 0.17.3.

Then, from the Modrinth, I installed Sodium (mc1.21.10-0.7.2-fabric) and Chunks Fade In (v3.0.9-1.21.9-fabric) latest versions.

I dont use another mods or resource pack or shaders in this instance.

Then I went into the game. From the settings, just turned off the music, change FOV to 90 and change brightness to 100%, disable VSync. Another settings left as standard.

Then i entered the new standard world on a peaceful difficulty. I went into the end, killed all entities via /kill@e (including the end crystals) and started observing this problem again. Changing the camera angle doesn't do anything.

I replicated it! Turns out having Iris loaded somehow fixes this, so it happens if you have only Sodium. Thanks :)

Yo! I appear to be having this issue as well, at least with End Gateways. Is there a planned fix for this yet? Or is the cause of this issue still a mystery?

Here's my PC build and Java version shown in the F3 Menu. There's no glowing in this image because despite staying completely still, they seem to be flickering between rendering normally and glowing pure white. This also entirely depends on camera orientation for me.

I'm on Windows 11, I have the latest NVIDIA driver (581.80 from Nov 4, 2025), no resourcepacks, and the only other mods I have are Sodium, Iris, and Mod Menu. Having Iris loaded doesn't fix this issue for me. I tested this on Java 21 as well, no changes.

Hi! It depends on orientation, because you probably have some entities nearby, but if they are not in your FOV - they are not rendered. But anyway, sorry for taking so long, I forgot about this after I've failed again then. But now I tried something completely different and it finally worked. Will be in the next release :)

Sweet! Soon I won't have to travel through End Gateway strobe lights anymore! Though they would've been pretty nice to use for a disco party :)
