Reading stops when extension panel is closed, but will work if the panel is open

I am wondering if this is an issue specific to me and whether it's an issue as a result of using the "Google Translate English" voice. I noticed that when I highlight text, right click, and select read aloud using that Google Assistant-sounding voice, it will cut off early. Yet, I can get it to read the full selection by opening the extension panel.

This happens on all websites and on both Windows Chrome and Mac Chrome; through quite a few versions now, of both Chrome and the extension.

Is this something that's fixable? Perhaps a panel that doesn't cover as much of the webpage? I really wish there was a way to have the player controls appear floating on the webpage near the bottom center; just something to get the big popup out of the way as most text gets covered by it with full-width articles.
