I don't think anything has changed recently on this. We always have used font-awesome for these icons.
I have chosen the option "open in place". It should just launch Kiwix and directly open the according ZIM file, without any additional manipulation.

@benjaoming I tried with latest 3.2.0-1 and GNU/Linux and actually for me, now, it does not crash (anymore?). Somehow the kiwix-serve is stuck and load without any end.

We have more and more ZIM files with PDF, EPUB or DOCS. The appropriate behaviour is that if someone clicks on one of these items and Kiwix can not read/render...
