Allow selecting "current" clue in the "non-current" direction in portrait mode

When you're in portrait mode where the across/down clues appear in 2 vertical lines, you cannot select the "current" (centered) clue in the non-current direction.

Using this borrowed screenshot as an example, 1 Down is selected, but if you touch the 1 Across clue "Star in Orion" nothing happens. Touching 6 Across works fine (if there were a clue to the left it would also work), but not the one that's currently selected.

I remember trying to fix this a few years ago and the issue seemed to be that the widget for the "Across" clues considered that box to be selected so it ignored any input. Maybe there's an easy fix?
