How do you create the list?

Open kstka opened this issue 5 years ago • 26 comments

Hi.

I have a guess that your list works for US mostly. Because as soos as I switch my youtube location and languege to US, I get much less ads than when Im "located" in Russia.

Could you please share the way you create the list? Then I will be able to create a Russian version for myself and finally get rid of ads.

Thanks

Thanks, I will wait for it.

BTW I have tested it out for some more and I can say that your list works great for US, no ads at all

Thank you very much @kstka for your encouragement and feedback

I'm also interested in the way of creating the list.

The current list does not work in Germany.

@nikeee I will try to upload it this weekend. I am sorry for the delay, but I have a crazy busy schedule these days

kboghdady avatar Feb 03 '20 17:02 kboghdady

Sorry do disturb you, @kboghdady . Maybe you will find time to post your script\idea sooner or later. There is no problem if it is a draft, I can code it and sent it back to you.

I have tried this project https://github.com/foae/pihole-youtube-block , but it was totally blocking youtube. So the youtube ads problem is still relevant.

Thanks!

Hey, I'd be interested too. List does not seem to work for Switzerland...

I'm in the UK and I'm interested in contributing to the list or this project in general, if I can help then please let me know.

Opening up the way you generate the list, I might be able to set up a cron myself to fetch the list for Austria and push automated PRs.

I'm currently trying foae/pihole-youtube-block to get the domain list from the logs. It appears to be working although the blocking is obviously retroactive as the ad has to be shown for its domain to appear in the logs.

@RCH-9 can't we somehow crowd-source domain collection?

I think I'm going to abandon trying to block via DNS, it's just too unreliable because ads and videos are served from the same domains. If you block ads, it's inevitable you will block videos as well.

RCH-9 avatar Aug 09 '20 19:08 RCH-9

I believe @RCH-9 is searching for a way to make this a business model, so there's no chance that he will open up and crowd source list making. Guess we can drop out and abandon it here.

franz-josef-kaiser avatar Aug 09 '20 22:08 franz-josef-kaiser

@RCH-9 I might do the same, I'm just trying to avoid the hassle of setting up Kodi on a separate device and I kinda like the network wide blocking. I tried this list with US VPN and you're right, it's not really reliable, it blocks videos probably 7 out of ten times but also there are false positives and when it happens it is really annoying

What on earth are you talking about? I simply made a list using the tool mentioned by kstka on March 1st and tried that. Like any DNS method for YT, it blocks ads but also blocks the videos. It's perfectly free for you to try yourself.

Yeah, the simple conclusion is DNS level blocking is possibly never going to work reliably because you can't block one without the other.

@RCH-9 my apologies!
