Feature request: Windows electron app - use a VM and evaluation copy of Windows to build
Hi, the electron app is exactly what I'm looking for!! I'm just wanting a simple GUI that is 100% local. But I'm on a Windows computer. :(
Just because you only have a Mac, doesn't mean you can't find a work around. If you have enough disk space, you could use VirtualBox (strongly recommended) then get an evaluation copy of Windows 10 for the virtual machine. If you don't have enough disk space, then using an external hard drive with VirtualBox is another option. It's almost impossible for Windows to have a Mac VM, but quite easy for a Mac to have a Windows VM so you'll want to take advantage of that.
Below are some options. All are good for 90 days which should be plenty of time for testing, but the development one is more concrete on the time to keep more updated with new Windows 10 releases. By the time the 90 days is up, it's usually time for a major upgrade of Windows 10 so can get a newer version.
- IE11/Legacy Edge test machine: https://developer.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-edge/tools/vms/
- Windows 10 Enterprise: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/evalcenter/evaluate-windows-10-enterprise
- Windows 10 Developer: https://developer.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/downloads/virtual-machines/
^ The Developer version is usually the best option, but be aware the expiration is soon because a Windows 10 20H2 is going to drop any week now. So you may want to wait on that one until after the 11/17/20 expiration date.
I recommend sticking to a traditional .exe type of file and not a store app. Sorry, I'd fork, but I've never done NPM/React development and I need to concentrate on a full stack Django/Postgres project for my portfolio. Definitely happy to help end-user test if you release an .exe file.
Hope this helps. Thank you for considering this.
Hi, I didnt' find time to work on my project since I become a father :-) but I'd like to continue now. Sorry to keep you waiting. I alerady tried to build a test version for Windows at the end of the last year, but there were some issues as far I can remember.
The idea is actually to implement GitHub actions and build assets for all operating system automatically.
And yeas, I will try to create a windows executable, since I don't want to mess with any App-Stores.
