Is it possible to change the background to dark?

This version of vimiv completely relies on your global Gtk theme for the colours, so you would have to switch to a theme with a global dark background for this effect.

In case you would like much more flexibility concerning the looks, I would refer you to the newer qt port with some information on migrating. Here you can define your style using base16 and override every option individually. Most of the base16 colour schemes are available at base16-vimiv.
