I am having the same exact problem in my Ubuntu 18.04.1 VM with a kubuntu 18.04 host.
I tested this in Ubuntu 16.04 LTS VM with a kubuntu host and I did not have this issue.
@korben546 "latest version of ubuntu" is rather unhelpful -- I understand you may be running 18.10/cosmic, but which spin?
@awsaunier Can you run customizer-gui from a terminal and note the output, as korben546 did?
it appears you do not have mit-shm enabled, and something is going wrong.
Can you tell me if these were fresh installations of *buntu, or upgrades from a previous release?
Is this actually "Ubuntu Desktop 18.10", like, the one off ubuntu.com? I'm downloading it now and I'll try it in vmware to see if I get the same issue.
(For reference, I've been running customizer fine in Lubuntu 16.04, 18.04, and the new lxqt based 18.10 release.)
