Strange behavior when using text mode

After compiling manually, I was just playing around with birdy. I really like the simplicity of birdy (it's not noisy).

When entering text mode there is a strange behavior: Dots are added randomly while typing (I guess), see screenshot (I did type test this example). Furthermore, there are letters and numbers available but no special signs like !@#$%^&*()_
