No pixels turn on

Hi,

I've got a rPi3 with 6x8x8 matrixes connected in chain. I can talk with the panels using the examples in rpi_ws281x just fine but I've yet to be able to use whiterabbit to write (modified all the necessary variables, running as root, etc.) Is there something to check? I've even distilled down whiterabbit.py to just display static text but when it runs, nothing is ever displayed.

What can I check to debug?
