Improve motif detection in configure script

unfortunately motif does not have a pkg-config file.

I filed an issue a few months ago: http://bugs.motifzone.net/show_bug.cgi?id=1724

@dpeterc I know we discussed the state of motif maintenance before, so i'm not expecting anything to happen. But if you have any suggestions or influence in regards to this issue in the future, that would be helpful.
