Bug: Licecap captures black screens.
system: MacOs What should I do? @justinfrankel @cfillion @veto-gh @justinfrankel @bbbbabbababba THKS!!!!
Yeah, I have this same issue as well. I tried version 1.29 and version 1.30 I'm running MacOS Catlina v 10.15.5
I have this same issue and have had it for several months. It only happens on my second monitor. If I capture on my primary monitor it works.
I reckon it may happen when licecap starts on one screen and then moved to another. If you move it then quit and open again (will start on the second screen) it works fine.

Started having this issue after upgrading to macOS Big Sur 11.2.3. Even after upgrading to LICEcap 1.31 and setting the security settings (see https://github.com/justinfrankel/licecap/issues/106), all I'd get is a mouse on a black screen. Opening/Recording on different displays all had the same result.
However, after changing the "Assign To" from "None" to "All Desktops", it started working again:
Setting it back to "None" or any other option does not seem to affect the recording. Not sure how or why this worked, but hopefully this info helps.
I have the same black screen with only the pointer being visible. Config:
- MBP M1
- Big Sur 11.4
- External monitors using DisplayLink docking station (tested with laptop screen as well)
- Screen Recording permission enabled
我认为当 licecap 在一个屏幕上启动然后移动到另一个屏幕时可能会发生这种情况。如果你移动它然后退出并再次打开(将在第二个屏幕上开始)它工作正常。
thank you
Hey folks,
I'm a big fan of LICEcap, but I have struggled with this black screen issue on different external monitors for the past few years. After a recent laptop refresh where I'm now working of a new M1 2020 Air running Big Sur 11.6 I ran into this issue again. The good news is that I was able to resolve it today with a trick I haven't seen anyone else mention yet. I hope it helps someone else who loves LiceCAP but struggles with this issue.
The trick for me was to:
- Bring up the Displays arrangement preference.
- Drag the 'menu bar' to one of the external external monitor.
- Restart LICECap.
My Result: It started working on both my extended monitor and my DisplayLink USB Adapter monitor(used to work around M1 chip limitation). Moving the menu bar back to the built-in retina display causes the problem to reoccur again so I'm pretty sure it's the cause for me.
Hopefully this helps some of the folks in this thread.
Other Notes:
- The Black Screen issue only happened when using Licecap was used on an external monitor. When starting Licecap on the Retina Display it worked fine. This is likely because the menu bar was present on the retina display.
- If you are seeing a grey background instead a transparent outline, you likely are running to a common issue where you don't have permissions setup. Ensure that LICECap is listed under "Security & Privacy" -> "Screen Recording". I also have it listed under Accessibility although I don't know if that's required or not.
- I have installing different version of LICECap to bypass this issue which have not helped. Currently I am on the latest 1.31 version with this solution working.
- I discovered this solution accidentally when I decided to test out this bug by closing my macbook so I was only working off two external monitors. To my surprise LICECap started to work on both monitors. That gave me the hint I needed to find this solution. I really hope it works for you as I know how frustrating it can be to drag and resize whatever you need to share with someone else. Good luck!
