Black GIF output in El Capitan 10.11.2
When trying to use LICEcap on my mac the only output I'm seeing is a black gif and in some captures I can see cursor being tracked. Both of my capture attempts were set to a max FPS of 8 frames.
Steps I've tried:
- Reducing the size of the capture
- Reducing the length of the capture
with shortened capture length and smaller res size:
Same here at MAC OS X 10.9.5 – after uninstall with AppCleaner and reinstall it work's again.
Edit: only the first capture works. Now I have black gifs again ;(
Using LiceCap v1.25 I have same problem.
Black gifs (with pointer) are recorded on Macbook 15" with El Capitan. This seems to always be the case when multiple monitor are connected, it doesn't matter which monitor the program is capturing from.
If I recall correctly I was able to record one gif, but I had to reboot first and make the recording prior to connecting the external monitors.
Used to work fine on multi-monitor setups on both Maverics, Yosemite and El Capitan on a Macbook pro 13".
~~Seems to work for me on my El Capitan Macbook.~~ I see this affect when I maximize the capture to full screen only.
@trashofmasters there hasn't been a commit in 6 months - were you using a version from prior to then? If you're ambitious you could try to use git bisect
to isolate the regression.
This is a problem in the original Licecap https://github.com/lepht/licecap/issues/4 as well.
By the way, brew cask
probably does not install this version. I installed using brew cask which downloads 1.25 directly from the homepage. This repository is versioned at 1.26 https://github.com/justinfrankel/licecap/commit/7546b1b1fcdba7f311d9a6c0174b475968877770
+1 I'm having the same problem when I updated to EL Capitan on my early 2015 MacBook Pro. Only the mouse is show with black screen.
+1 Same problem but it only occurs if you have multiple screens connected. If I unplug my 2nd screen it works as expected. I'm using v1.25 and El Captain 10.11.2
Just tried unplugging my second monitor as per @cgrossde and it worked like a charm!
edit: huh, now it works with my second monitor plugged in as well. I'm on El Capitan 10.11.3 now.
Can confirm - works fine on multiple monitors running latest OSX 10.11.3
@viklas Same OSX version but black screen...
+1 Is this going to be fixed anytime soon?
Same Here El Capitan

Having the same problem. OSX Yosemite - 10.10.5 - licecap v 1.25
FYI.. This is not an issue for me using licecap v 1.24 - I uninstalled v1.25 and installed 1.24. Will stick with the old version for now since that seems stable. http://www.cockos.com/licecap/licecap124.dmg
Thanks @AdamKalnas, I reverted back to 1.24 as well and it worked for me! With 1.25 I was only able to record successfully once in the past week.
I also got just one good capture from going back to 1.24, after that it was just a black screen again.
@MattQlik - make sure that you are taking the gif from the main active display
@AdamKalnas Thanks for the hint. I was using it on the main display if you mean the one with the Dock. I have a setup with two monitors connected to a Macbook and my Dock is on one of the monitors. I've now installed 1.23 and that seems to work so I'll stick with that for now.
Tried downgrading to 1.24 and also capturing on my main display, but still getting a black GIF. LiceCap is great, but this just makes it a little difficult to use currently 😉
I also have the same issue on OSX 10.10.5 with LiceCap 1.25. I'm only getting black GIFs as a result.
1.24 works for me. @JKillian
Can you make your Thunderbolt Display is set to be something like this?
v1.25 has the same issue on MacOS Sierra v10.12. And v1.24 seemed ok in my main display, and still black in my second display.
I had the same issue (El Capitan 10.11.6 and licecap v1.25) and was able to resolve it by unplugging the hdmi to my monitor. When it was plugged in, recording on the main laptop desktop display did not work, but as soon as I unplugged it, it worked normally.
+1
Neither 1.25 nor 1.24 work for me. Unplugging secondary display does not help as well. OsX 10.12.1 (16B2555)
macOS Sierra 10.12.2
LICEcap v1.25
I can confirm that unplugging my external display allowed me to record a gif
without having nothing but a black result.
Went back to 1.24, no display plugged in - it works.
As others have mentioned, I unplugged my external monitor, quit and restarted LiceCap, and it worked. macOS Sierra 10.12.2
FYI, I found a software that works on external monitor, https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/giphy-capture.-the-gif-maker/id668208984?mt=12
Just want to let you guys know, who had been struggling for at least a year.
I unplugged all external monitors on macOS Sierra 10.12.3 and this bug still occurs with Licecap 1.25 (gif with black screen was recorded).
I confirm that I have the same issue, with two screens, with LICEcap v1.25, on a MacOS Sierra 10.12.3 (macbook pro 13" end 2016)
with just my macbook screen it works normaly
Same problem on OS X, downgraded to 1.24 and unplugged Thunderbolt monitor, and it worked
