Emacs freezes when which-key-side-window-max-width is set to 1

It doesn't freeze for me. That's a nonsensical setting for that variable, but I'd like to know what's causing the freeze.

When I try I just get a message that which-key can't display the keys, but nothing is frozen. I'll need more info to track this down.
