Save and Export Notebook As... doesn't work!
Description
Currently, I'm using JupyterLab desktop Version 3.3.4-2. I can't export my .ipynb file as .py using Save and Export Notebook As...! JupyterLab doesn't display the inner panel to see the options of Save and Export Notebook As...!
Reproduce
- Open or create a new notebook
- try to export it as a
.pyfile using File>Save and Export Notebook As... - Click on Save and Export Notebook As...
- Nothing shows up!
Expected behavior
A panel that at least contains the .py format.
Context

In the conda environment that you chose ("Python3.10"), is there nbconvert installed? If not, could you try installing it? Could you provide a full conda list for that environment?
Yes, I installed it a long time ago:
As you can see, the name of conda env matches the name of env in the JupyterLab (look te the picture I've provided in the Reproduce section).

I appear to be having the same issue. How do you get back to python 3.9?

wdym on this? You can have several Python patches via environments.
@tttucker34 are you still having issues with this? if so, can you retry with the latest version (3.6.1-1)?

I was pretty sure this was working last time I used this environment.
So I created a new one by updating nbconvert and I now get the dialog :

I recommend reopening it. I'm having the same issue. I've done a pip install --update jupyterlab and it's still not working. I'm running Python 3.9.

I am no expert, but next worked for me:
1º create new virtual env with py3.10

I solved my problem. I had created a custom notebook exporter template incorrectly. It was preventing any of the built-in notebook exporter templates from showing up. Once I corrected my exporter template, the others came back. Seems like this is an issue of poor error handling. It should be changed to ignore exporter templates with errors, without hiding the correctly built ones.
Just chipping in to say that I initially found this to be the case on python 3.12.1. I resolved by running
pip uninstall jupyter_contrib_nbextensions
Another option is to utilize Google Colab for the conversion process. By uploading your IPYNB file to Google Colab, you can leverage its computing resources to perform the conversion to your desired format. couple of notes here:
- make sure you have a notebook open and activated as the current tab when you open the export menu.
- are you having the issue in the bundled Python environment or a custom environment?
- can you try with the JupyterLab web app, are you able to reproduce? You can launch a terminal in the environment and run
jupyter labto launch the web app.
I'm in the same boat. running in venv, python 3.10 ubuntu 22. juypyterlab v4.1. installed via pip. Looks like this problem has been open for quite some time. Guess I'm going to use nbconvert. EDIT: dropped back to 3.6 and things seem to work.
