Split and refactor the team meeting format (2/2): Steering Council Meeting
In addition to #617, I think the other half of this is forming a dedicated steering council meeting. This doesn't need to follow the collab cafe format, so I think it should be separate. It will also ensure steering council members are focussed on the matter at hand, and not experiencing FOMO from what might be happening in another break-out room 😉
What would a steering council meeting need?
- A really good chair. I think chairing a steering council meeting is a slightly different skill than the general team meetings we've had so far since conversations will often be quite abstract, because they are strategy-based, and possibly uncomfortable, since we will likely be talking about power/responsibility and who should/shouldn't have it.
- Agendas formed ahead of time. Again, my intuition is that agendas for steering council meetings would work differently to our team meetings. They would probably need to be curated in advance for the meeting to be productive and decisions reached within the meeting (if they need to be)
- Anything else? My experience with steering council meetings is not large, so I could have missed something.
Actions
- [ ] Consensus from the team that this is worth piloting
- [ ] When should this call happen, how frequently, and for how long? (We should try to keep alternating time zones too)
- [ ] How to communicate this change to the community? Blog, Discourse post, anything else?
We have a practice of swapping timezones for alternating meetings to allow people in different timezones to attend when convenient for them. We should continue this practice, but also alternate the timezone of the steerco meeting relative to the collab cafe (#617). I.e. If in a given month the collab cafe is in a Europe/Asia friendly timezone, then the steerco meeting in the same month should be in a Americas/Europe friendly timezone. This should facilitate steerco members the ability to maintain regular contact points with the community without increasing the burden of extra meetings in a month (hopefully).
