Conduct member research to learn about current community strategy and future needs/wants
Context
Before I can begin to develop new strategies for the community, I first need to discover and understand what strategies the community has had previously, and where the community is currently at. To do this, I am proposing conducting member research and/or something akin to a listening tour^1.
By collecting the views from a cross-section of the community, we can identify themes around what the community thinks is working well, what needs to be improved, what is missing, and begin to build strategies to address those themes.
I'm proposing to begin this in earnest after the Outreachy contribution period closes (post-October) as that will be a really busy month for myself and other folks in the community. However, Anne Steele (The Turing Way Community Manager) and I have setup weekly 1-to-1's where we can begin to discuss some of this content (alongside other TTW stuff!)
Actions
- [ ] Scope logistics of running these kinds of interviews from @aleesteele
- Anne performed similar member research in The Turing Way while onboarding herself as Community Manager^2,^3
- An in-kind contribution to The Turing Way (relevant for the grant^4) could be to write up a general process for conducting member research as a chapter in the book
- Examples of logistical questions to consider are:
- Question design
- How to collate notes from the interviews
- How to analyse the notes and extract themes
- [ ] Fine-tune what areas we want to discuss/what questions we want to know the answers to with @choldgraf
- [ ] Invite specific members to interview
- E.g., council members or members I've had previous chats with and want to deep-dive into certain related topics
- [ ] Invite members of the broader community to interview
- Setup a timeslot booking system via Calendly
- Disseminate invitation on:
- [ ] Discourse
- [ ] Gitter
- [ ] Summarise/report main discussion threads from interviews and suggest some strategies to build/refine as a result
