thebe 'run' button plays hide and seek

in all thebe-powered pages that I can find, the right arrow button that is supposed to let us run the cell code has a teasing behaviour - see attached screencast

actually this is a behaviour that I have observed many times in the past At the time I thought I had the configuration wrong so I did not pay much attention

there is no message issued in the browser console during this behaviour

and here we're lucky to catch it the third time around, sometimes after 10 attempts it's still not cooperating..

Additional notes

this is on macos 15.6.1 using chrome 141 I see the same with safari 18.6
