Advertise official Docker images a bit more

Some context

On a stack I maintain (JRuby app), I use CircleCI for testing, and it has been using the CircleCI-provided circleci/jruby images for years (https://circleci.com/docs/2.0/circleci-images/#jruby).

On December 31, 2021, though, "legacy images" (prefixed with "circleci") became deprecated in favour of "next gen convenience images" (https://discuss.circleci.com/t/legacy-convenience-image-deprecation/41034, https://circleci.com/blog/announcing-our-next-generation-convenience-images-smaller-faster-more-deterministic/). These images are prefixed with cimg rather than circleci).

Initially the KB at https://discuss.circleci.com/t/legacy-convenience-image-deprecation/41034 indicated "no suggested path" for circleci/jruby.

I ultimately discovered that there are official JRuby images (https://hub.docker.com/_/jruby), and was able to use them instead of the CircleCI image quite easily, just by adding git and sudo.

After a bit of exchange on twitter with @headius and @felicianotech (https://twitter.com/FelicianoTech/status/1488284594612981762), the doc at CircleCI have been updated.

Proposal

It would be great to advertise the official Docker images. I presume more people are going to have to upgrade (for CircleCI), and also it is great to get more value out of the existing work which has been poured into this.

I believe:

  • having a direct Docker link / page of some sort on the JRuby site would be nice
  • same from within the readme on the current repo

Just ideas at this point, let me know what you think!
