Watch: Improvements in Rails 8 may make it possible to do most of what we do here with Rails

If everything in this ticket had been here when we started (Back in Rails 4.2!!!) -- this gem would be much smaller, or maybe wouldn't need to exist?

We may want to hold off on any major refactors until we see how all this below shakes out, may result in wanting major refactors here to make this possibly a much thinner layer on top of ActiveRecord/ActiveModel features. They are implementing a lot of what we implemented here, it looks to me.
