This should return an error code until some memory issues are encountered in https://github.com/OSGeo/gdal/blob/master/gdal/port/cpl_error.cpp#L152 when invoking https://github.com/OSGeo/gdal/blob/master/gdal/port/cpl_error.cpp#L821. I'm not certain that https://github.com/OSGeo/gdal/blob/master/gdal/port/cpl_multiproc.cpp#L2320 is doing more than just checking for memory...

As identified by @rodyoukai, this is related to conflicts between the jQuery releases introduced with the upgrade for https://rubygems.org/gems/jquery-rails/versions/4.4.0 and (https://github.com/samvera/browse-everything/blob/v1.1.2/vendor/assets/javascripts/jquery.treetable.js) (please see https://github.com/ColmexBDCV/colmex_hyrax/blob/master/Gemfile#L84)
