Expected Behavior

Footnote syntax highlighting is rudimentary in markdown mode; but it should at least be consistent.

Actual Behavior

The highlighting of brackets and text is affected by the presence of brackets (from, for example, citations) in the footnote.

Steps to Reproduce

The text from the screenshot above can be entered:

[^1]: Propositions 6 and 7, based ultimately on Kepler's statement in the introduction to this chapter that light is archetypcially spherical, in the image of the sphericity of the Trinity.

[^2]: On Kepler's conception of light, and his use of these a priori descriptions of its nature (as he himself calls them), see [@Buchdahl1972-ui, esp. 270-272].

[^3]: "qua facultate fieri possit, ut affectio superficiei pellucidae luci imprimatur?" [@Kepler1604-wm, 16].

[^4]: Proposition 4 on the rays in a beam; proposition 8 that the rays are not a part of the light but are simply its rectilinear motion, "while the movable thing is a kind of surface" (mobile vero, est superficies quaedam).

Software Versions

  • Markdown mode: version 2.5-dev

I cannot reproduce your issue by minimum configurationc(emacs -Q -l markdown-mode.el test.md). Could you tell us minimum configuration which reproduces your issue ?

It seems to be a problem with pandoc-mode; as soon as I disable that, the correct highlighting (as you show it) appears.
