Link to wiki from manual
Many key jq language features are not very evident in the manual. One that just tripped me up was the operator precedence (,vs |), but there are already a bunch of open issues here requesting better documentation of various langauge features, including this one. Apparently the community here has decided such clear semantics should be documented in the Wiki rather than the manual, which seems to prefer a more mystical and indirect approach to explanation. The Wiki itself has some header mentioning such reasons, which no doubt could be debated forever.
In the meanwhile, it would be much easier for noobs (or infrequent users) to use jq if the "official" manual had a link to the wiki. You might even want to add the title "jq Language Reference" to the Wiki (and maybe a few other key search terms) to increase findability.
This should be an easy action with enormous time savings (and maybe even more jq users).
Hi, yeap agree. By "Language Reference" do you mean the jq Language Description page?
I hope we can get https://github.com/jqlang/jq/pull/3189 merged, i think that would clarify a lot of things.
Yes, "Language Description" sounds like it might be very high-level, but it has some useful details.
Wiki link is now live
