Violation of Orcid license conditions
Conversion of the orcid logo to black and white is not permitted unless it is used in a black and white print, however it appears on a colour rendered page: https://jpswalsh.github.io/academicons/.
https://orcid.org/trademark-and-id-display-guidelines
@GrahamCampbell ORCiD’s green (#a6ce39
) is not often WCAG-compliant on most background colours, including #ffffff
white, (so it’s not accessible) and also doesn’t look good on many other background colours.
@sssoz Unfortunately that doesn't constitute a valid exception to their license terms. You should raise the issue of accessibility directly with them. The only solution is to not show their logo at all if you are worried about being sued for accessibility breaches. Changing their logo colour could get you sued by them.
@GrahamCampbell I mean, the reason people think about accessibility is not because they are worried about being sued, but because they care about user experience.
Well, yes, but in order to comply with the license, that means you cannot show the logos to anyone.
FontAwesome provides this icon as well, so probably removing this icon from academicons may resolve this issue for now. However, it appears to me that the license is not really well-thought-out...
The academicon page currently says « All product names, logos, and brands are are the property of their respective owners. Use of these names, logos, and brands does not imply endorsement. » to which could be added something along the lines of « Ensure that you have the legal right to do use trademarked logos, and see the trademark owner for rules about their appropriate use. » (which is similar to what WikiMedia and FontAwesome use).
Then it’s each user’s responsibility to make the icon orcid green #a6ce39
or use it on black-and-white pages, and all of their other rules (only use the icon next to an id, etc. etc.). That should probably also cover #124.
